    Ghost Tunnels! (Woooo! 👻)

Today our beautiful friends at b-side are launching a 2 day event at the High Angle Battery on Portland (known locally as the Ghost Tunnels). We highly recommend that you go along and take a look at the instalation, State Of Alarm today (26th April) or tomorrow. It’s open from 1400-1900 on both days.

Unfortunately, our lovely librarians will be supporting the event, so we will be unable to open the library today. We will be around this evening, if you would like a late visit. Just email us at [email protected]

  • Trans Solidarity

    Trans Solidarity

Last week’s Supreme Court ruling was a blow to trans people and their allies. At best, it was short-sighted, ill-judged, and uninformed. The Court upheld a legal interpretation that allows trans women to be defined as men under certain provisions of the Equality Act—specifically, in the context of single-sex services like women’s shelters. This decision will not only affect trans and non-binary people across the UK, but also endanger cis men and women who don’t conform to traditional gender norms.

Even before this ruling, there were reports of cis women being harassed, bullied, or even reported while using women-only spaces—simply for being butch, having short hair, or being perceived as “too tall” to be a “real” woman. The Supreme Court has, in effect, told transphobic and trans-critical individuals that this kind of behaviour is acceptable. It clearly isn’t.

On 23 April, YouTuber and trans activist Katy Montgomerie hosted a three-hour livestream discussing the ruling and its broader consequences for both trans and cis people. Toward the end (linked here), she shared several ways that we, as trans folk and allies, can take action. We’ve included the links she shared below, but we also encourage you to watch the final section of her stream to hear her call to action directly. (If the link doesn’t take you to the right moment, the relevant section begins at 02:48:00.)

  • We’re Back

    We’re Back

Back to life, Back to reality,
Back to the here and now, oh yeah
Show me how, decide what you want from me
Tell me maybe I could be there for you

    Soul II Soul

The Bank Holiday weekend has come and gone, and we’re easing back into normality — though let’s be honest, there’s no such thing as “normal” around here, and we like it that way. Whether your routine is back in full swing or you’re still figuring out what day it is, the library is open today from 3pm to 6pm, ready to welcome you in whatever state you arrive.

Come in for a read, a browse, to borrow something new, or simply to sit quietly and exist in a space that asks nothing of you. You’re always welcome here, however you are, wherever you’re at.

  • 🌈 Lesbian Visibility Week

    🌈 Lesbian Visibility Week

This week is a celebration, a recognition, and a reminder. Lesbian Visibility Week exists to amplify voices that too often go unheard, to honour the past, and to stand in solidarity with the future.

Here at the Little Tiny Library, we believe everyone deserves to see themselves in stories, on shelves, and in the world around them. This week, we’re especially celebrating the strength, joy, complexity, and creativity of lesbian lives — in literature, in community, and beyond.

Visibility matters. It’s how we say: you belong, you are seen, and you are welcome here.

  • Tiny Gallery Session – 30th April

Tiny Gallery Session – 30th April

We have an upcoming Tiny Gallery creative session on Tuesday 30th April!

Mark the date in your calendars and feel free to bring along anything you feel connected to that could be turned into a miniature exhibition piece — things like magazines, old newspapers, pins, poetry, quotes, or photos are all great starting points.

You absolutely don’t need to be an artist to join in — it’s all about getting creative, having fun, and expressing yourself. It’s also a lovely chance to share the magic of our group with Portland locals and visitors alike.

On the day, we might be making things like miniature bunting, collages, pins, or 2D canvases with images and text. We may even showcase some of the photos from our last session.

One fun idea that’s been floated is creating a tiny version of our new Tiny Library — complete with miniature books! It would make a brilliant addition to the gallery.

All materials will be provided (paint, glue, mini canvases, blank pins etc), so just bring yourself and anything you’d like to use or share.

Looking forward to a fun and creative couple of hours with you all!

Email us at [email protected] for more information!

  • Closed For The Weekend, Open At Heart

Closed For The Weekend, Open At Heart

We’ll be closed this Saturday for the bank holiday weekend, but please know—we’re still here for our community.

If you’d like to pop in to read, borrow a book, or simply be somewhere you feel safe, just drop us an email at [email protected]. We’ll happily make time for you.

Please don’t hesitate—you’re not a burden, and it’s never an inconvenience. You are seen, and you are loved.

  • Standing Together: A Message of Solidarity with Trans and Non-Binary Communities

Standing Together: A Message of Solidarity with Trans and Non-Binary Communities

Today, the UK Supreme Court delivered a ruling that has left many in the trans and non-binary communities feeling uncertain and vulnerable. The decision states that the legal definitions of “woman” and “man” under the Equality Act 2010 are based on biological sex, not gender identity. This means that even individuals with a Gender Recognition Certificate are legally considered to be of their birth-assigned sex.

While the ruling doesn’t revoke protections against discrimination for trans and non-binary people, it does create new challenges in areas such as access to single-sex services and representation.

At Little Tiny Library, we want you to know: you are not alone. The strength and resilience of our community have always been our guiding lights, and together, we will continue to support one another.

  • We Were On The Radio!

    We Were On The Radio!

We were on the radio! Last night, 9th April, our voluntary librarian Nat was interviewed by Kathy Caton for BBC Radio. She told Kathy all about the formation of the library and the queer club that it sprang from.

I don’t want to spoil it for you, so check out BBC Sounds, around 21 minutes in.

Edit: The BBC Sounds link has now expired. We have uploaded the audio file here …

“It was a long weary time, for the Boy was too ill to play, and the little Rabbit found it rather dull with nothing to do all day long. But he snuggled down patiently, and looked forward to the time when the Boy should be well again, and they would go out in the garden amongst the flowers and the butterflies and play splendid games in the raspberry thicket like they used to.” – Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit

Unfortunatley, the library will not be occupied today, as one of our librarians is unwell. However, unlike the Velveteen Bunny, you do not have to wait to invigorate your imagination. If you let us know, we can come over and open by appointment.

  • We Had A Visitor

    We Had A Visitor

Today we had a visit from the lovely Mel, co-author of Pop & Olly book, “What Does LGBT+ Mean?”. She bought with her a selection of books, to donate to the library, and we had some really interesting discussion about what she does, the library and how small actions can make a huge difference.

Thank you, Mel, for your donation, your support, and the impact you have on the broader community! It was so lovely to meet you.

You can find out more about Mel on her Instagram or Website
